BEFORE YOU APPLY

Do I need speaking experience to apply?

No. Some of our strongest competitors had never spoken publicly before their first competition. The story is the great equalizer here. What matters is that you have something true to say and the willingness to learn how to say it well, which is exactly what the coaching is for.

What if my story does not feel big or dramatic enough?

You do not need to have survived extraordinary hardship to belong on this stage. A shift in perspective, a hard won lesson, or a realization that changed your direction can move a room just as deeply. If you have been wondering whether your story is enough, that question is usually a sign that it is.

I am not sure I am ready. Should I wait?

Almost no one feels ready before their first Speaker Slam® competition. The speakers you would call ready now were not ready when they started either. They built it through the months of preparation and coaching the program is designed around. Waiting for the feeling to arrive on its own rarely works. The more useful question is what waiting costs you. Every season you sit out is another season without the footage, the credentials, and the speech on record, which means more time spent building a speaking brand without the foundation it runs on. If you have been going back and forth on this for a while, that back and forth is usually your answer.

Why is there a fee to compete?

The Speaker Slam® competition is the catalyst inside a larger development system, and the fee reflects that. You choose a competition and commit to a date, and the fee covers the support that gets you ready for it plus six months of Momentum membership that continues after: regular classes, sessions with TEDx trainers, publishers, and PR experts, a community on the same path, and a certification track with clear milestones toward getting booked and paid. You also walk away with professional footage, event photography, and the credibility of competing in front of an industry judging panel. Most of the development happens around and after the night. The point is to commit to the stage now and build from there.

I do not pay to speak. Why is Speaker Slam® different?

It is the most common pushback we hear, and it is a fair one to raise. The resistance usually comes from picturing a fee for stage time. Here is the more useful way to see it. You are investing in your personal brand by having the speaker assets you need. Put it plainly. How can you be a speaker with no stage footage of you speaking? Our high quality footage puts you over the edge. Almost every professional speaker you can name put money into coaching, footage, and credibility before anyone paid them to be on a stage. Mostly, you are betting on yourself, and this is a stage built for that bet to pay off.

How does competing set me apart from other speakers?

Most people who call themselves speakers have very little behind the title. A bio, a headshot, maybe a phone clip from the back of a room. Competing changes that on two levels. You commit to a competition and are coached through preparing for it, then keep developing across storytelling, personal branding, and the business of speaking on a certification path that continues well after the night. You also walk away with professional footage, event photography, and the standing of having earned your place on the Speaker Slam® stage. Most speakers never get either the development or the proof. Having both is what makes you the obvious choice when someone is deciding who to book, whether you are just starting or already speaking and ready for a bigger platform. This is what investing in your personal brand actually looks like.

I already speak and post. Why would competing change anything?

This is common, and it is usually the people already putting in real effort who feel it most. You speak when you can, you post, you say yes, and for a while it feels like progress. Then it plateaus. The reason is rarely talent or whether you have something worth saying. What stalls is reach, because most people were never shown how to position their message so it creates real opportunities, or how to back it with proof. That is the gap competing at Speaker Slam® closes. The stage is the catalyst, and the Momentum coaching behind it works across storytelling, personal branding, and the business of speaking, on a certification path that keeps building after the night. You leave with a sharpened message, the footage and credibility to back it, and a system that keeps developing it. For someone already doing the work, that is usually the missing piece.

What is included when I compete?

More than most people expect, and the bulk of it wraps around and continues after the competition. You choose a competition and commit to a date. You are supported in preparing your five minute speech, then deliver it on a live Speaker Slam® stage in Toronto in front of a 200 plus person audience and an industry judging panel. Around that, you step into six months of Momentum membership: coaching across storytelling, personal branding, momentum building, and the business of speaking, regular classes, sessions with TEDx trainers, publishers, and PR experts, a community, and a certification level with clear milestones. You also walk away with professional multi camera video, professional event photography, and, if you place, the credential of being an award winning speaker. You commit to the stage now, and the development keeps going long after.

How much does it cost?

Packages start at $2,997 and include the competition experience, coaching, and your professional video and photos. Other packages add brand and publicity support depending on where you want to take your speaking. The best way to find the right fit is a quick call with our team.

Do I have to be based in Toronto or Canada to compete?

No. Speakers travel to compete with us from across Canada, the United States, and internationally. The competitions are held live in Toronto, with the Grand Slam Finals at the CBC Glenn Gould Studio. If you can get to the stage on the night, you can compete.
