have you ever experienced Joy guilt I know that sounds weird right how many of us want to feel good but have you ever sabotaged a moment of Joy because you were overwhelmed with Shame about it hi on October 7th my plane touched down in am man Jordan and I couldn't wait to meet the six Brave women who'd come for a twoe hiking Adventure on one of National Geographic's most epic Trails led by by me because I am a joy Whisperer of sorts I have successfully followed the magical three-step formula for a joy-filled life step one admit that you're unhappy and quit your job step two

become an entrepreneur because we all know that's a guaranteed beeline to Joy and step three spend your days inspiring others to follow in your footsteps for the past few years I'd considered myself a professional Joy Seeker as the official hiking Maven of my company she walks the walk leading small groups of women on hiking Adventures to the most far-flung places and 6 weeks ago after 28 hours of travel I excitedly deed something in my bones told me that this adventure would be the most epic one yet and I was right but not in the way that I had thought as I headed to customs and

connected my phone to Wi-Fi it started blowing up Sam are you safe aren't you canceling the trip you got to get out now girl there I was trkking Po's backpack welcome Banner in hand a kind of proud mother hen eager to greet all my joy seeking chicks imagining gorgeous W rum Vistas and Unforgettable camel rides what we hadn't imagined was war breaking out just 147 km away war that word sucked all the joy out of the moment like a vacuum anxiety swirled in my head could tensions escalate and spell into Jordan would I be putting the women in any kind of potential danger could we

end up stuck here after some reassurance from the Jordanian tourism board we decided to carry on with our hike but that's how it began against a backdrop of a war torn Middle East I felt a responsibility to keep Spirits High despite knowing that this trip was no longer about finding Joy because I was grappling with the unrelenting guilt that asked Joy how dare we but we came to Jordan to walk so oh my God Walk we did we'd reach Petra after four days of sweating buckets our Indiana Jones moment felt surreal but what I won't forget is a moment I shared with an older bedan

woman she was selling magnets and other trinkets but that's not what drew me in it was her face all lined and wrinkled like a map each telling the story of a life that had been hard but her eyes so soft and kind she invited me for tea on her carpet and I swear we had an entire conversation without using any words her name was umfi one night we sheltered from a battering storm in our tents the world outside was seemingly holding its breath much like we were praying for a peaceful night and in the midst of that uncertainty we heard it heaw if you're not

sure that's a donkey Rahal our little support donkey bless him United the entire camp in laughter and days later still deeply conflicted I skipped a belly dance show to sit in silence on a rock high above our camp but the music drifted up so I turned and looked back hundreds of C candles had been lit in the surrounding caves below and something glittering caught my attention in the flicker of all that light pile of tiny Pebbles I scooped them up they were like little jewels of Joy I had collected on my trip and I gave each one a name om Mafi Ral are heong donkey

spontaneous laughter peaceful candles Joy was not hard to find if we aren't careful our guilt will cast a dark shadow on our happiness We Fear being toned deaf or insensitive to the suffering around us but joy is not a zero suome game feeling joy in a world burned by pain is an act of Courage it dares us to see the good amidst the chaos and we become Warriors not armed with weapons but with gratitude and unwavering determination to have hope so be a rebel collect your Pebbles name them and have the audacity to let them shine thank

yes Daddy was my classic response to the man I love more than anything in the whole wide world ends up if you did everything your dad asked growing up come on show of hands okay some Rebels out here whether mine asked me to eat my disgusting plate of tomatoes or try for valedictorian I complied because hearing him say Sammy I'm so proud was like oxygen for me but it turned my life into a treadmill of perfection pleasing and pressure and I ran as fast as I could trying to keep up besides dad knew best until that day in the coffee shop on the way to

school he'd asked if we could stop for a chat and I was thrilled to have some unscheduled time with him he got his usual double double when I sip my hot chocolate he looked so handsome in his navy suit but he was fiddling with a stir stick and his eyes seemed sad Sammy I think I'm in love with another woman my body went numb I stopped hearing all sound but I could tell he was pleading with me don't tell anyone I squeaked out the faintest yeah when he dropped me off at school I fled to the bathroom where my best friend found me sobbing keeping

his secret was an unbearable burden for 18 year old me evidently an enormous weight for her too she told her father our fathers worked together and mine got fired the guilt to almost ate me alive he had trusted me and I betrayed him my dad was committed to repairing and restoring our family I watched him work tirelessly to build a financial company from literally nothing and over time that nothing became a huge something I was 29 when he called me out of the blue while I nursed my baby girl Sammy how'd you like to be my succession plan I'm sorry you're what now I'm an

artsy fartsy girl with a music degree I got no place in business I looked down at my baby girl he was painting a lucrative future but as if I'd leave my thriving arts career my heart was screaming no I could already hear myself whispering steady and actually it was a great adventure at first dad and I were crushing it serving the clients growing the business I was winning Awards making dad proud yes daddy yes daddy yes daddy running faster and faster until bam I flew off the back of that treadmill and landed straight into my worst nightmare a compliance audit had revealed that I'd broken

the rules and suddenly everything was in jeopardy my livelihood my reputation dad's whole Legacy we managed to get through that but it birthed within me an internal War I needed to save myself and leave the business but how could I betray him again question haunted me so I decided to take a little walk just 800 kilometers on the Camino de Santiago in Spain I pounded the path day after day but struggled to find any answer until kilometer 456. Dusty empty road stumbled on my truth was never about betraying my father it was about not betraying me I've been asking the wrong question all along I

looked up at the sky and I proclaimed unequivocally it is time to say yes to me when I came home I sat him down and found the voice I'd stifled my whole life dad I don't want to do this anymore it has taken me decades to figure this out we have got to strike our own paths in life self trust is about finding our voice our courage and our own reasons for getting off these chaotic treadmills what are we doing why are we doing it what we want leaving the business I launched my own company she walks the walk leading women on soul-searching adventures around

the world where they too can finally say yes to themselves and this October I watched as the men who'd been my lifelong Compass lived peacefully away to his next chapter but not before we shared one last conversation he took my hand and said Sammy I'm so proud of you aren't you proud of you filled my response with all the love and truth of my heart yes daddy
