The results from the MRI confirm you have multiple sclerosis. Four words that suck the air out of my lungs. I can't breathe. My doctor's lips are still moving. What is she talking about? Explaining. Maybe treatment. Maybe options. maybe. But all I hear is the pounding in my ears and those lifech changing words. You have multiple sclerosis again and again and again. Her eyes meet mine and I see it. Pity. And then it hits me. It's real. I'm the patient. I'm the diagnosis.
I'm consumed by fear. Fear of never living the life most girls my age believe is waiting for them. Who will love a girl whose body might betray her? Will I walk down the aisle with my dad? Will I hold a baby that looks like me? The questions come hard and fast. And somewhere between the silence and the noise, I realize I'm 22 years old and my future has vanished. I've always wanted to be a teacher, a high school physical education teacher inspired by my own phys teacher, Carol.
Impacting students lives is her legacy. I wanted to be just like her. Just like her. But the five years after my diagnosis are the hardest, darkest years of my life. Each day my energy drained a little more until I was sidelined by fatigue, by exhaustion. Depression followed next. My life my life was fading into something that I didn't choose. Then the call came a clinical research trial for multiple sclerosis. And for the first time in my life in a long time, I felt hopeful.
Over the next 18 months, I felt alive again. Happy, fearless, unstoppable. The medicine was working. Then a letter. The research trial has been discontinued. And by the way, Patty, you were on the placebo. Placebo, a pill with no medicine, had completely changed my life. had completely changed my life. And it was then that I realized it wasn't the medicine. It was mindset. It was my mindset. And since then, I've stood on stages. I've written a book. I've done TEDex. I've shared my story with people around the world.
Not because my life turned out perfect, but because it didn't. Last summer, I won the 2025 changemaker trailblazer leader of the year award. And later I found out that 95% of my votes came from former students. And I realized I am like Carol. 30 years after leaving my teaching career, it was my students, the lives I touched who cast those votes. That's legacy and proof your story never ends. But tonight isn't only my story. It's for anyone who has sat in that cold doctor's room who's got the dreaded call who ever thought, "Why me?"
Your life is worth more than the limits the world throws at you. More than the whispers, the doubts, more than the fears that try to keep you small. So tell me, what makes a legacy? How tall you stand? I don't stand, but I'm proof that you can rise. And tonight on this stage, this is me standing. Thank you.
