I've always had a 5-year plan but two years ago that plan was wiped out and completely Rewritten into two simple Words Be Alive Now a couple months ago I had the opportunity to go learn how to surf in California and I met some awesome new friends and we all had one thing in common we were all ridiculously good-looking also cancer now 5 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and 2 years ago I learned that it had turned to stage 4 metastatic breast cancer therefore incurable and it's my heightened perspective on life that made me say yes to the surfing trip in the first place

and I learned so much it was symbolic to my life in so many ways there I was on the first day in the freezing cold ocean surrounded by sharks if anyone's asking and the fear was real what if I couldn't do this I've been through a lot the these past 5 years what if I wasn't strong enough to paddle out anymore what if I injured myself on the Rocks what if I couldn't get back through the crashing waves the what ifs can be crippling and in my life my fear of the future or lack thereof can be crippling too have you ever noticed that we're

all really good at creating the worst case scenarios what if we use the power of our imaginations to create the best case scenarios and then let's take that one step further and be brave enough to believe it to be true a little while ago I was joking around at home with my son and he thought it was going to be so hilarious that he would be taller than me one day immediately the intrusive thought I'll never know what it's like to hug my son when he's taller than me now it's taken me some time but I have learned that the key to staying positive is

to challenge those types of thoughts and beliefs and do the mental work for me personally consistent meditation has been a game changer do I know for sure that I won't be able to do that in the future no I don't is there a way that I can make this moment amazing for both of us right now yeah there is so I told him to stand up on our living room couch and hug me as tight as he's ever hugged me and as we both giggled it felt so good to let myself be in the future recently my daughter asked me if I was excited for

her to go to University and am I going to miss her if she decides to go far away immediately I thought it's going to take a literal miracle for me to be able to drop her off in a dorm room one day or will it do I know for sure that's true no I don't is there a chance that the best case scenario could play out yes yeah there is so in that moment I decided to tell her the truth I said of course I was excited for her no matter what she decided to do and I'm going to be the proudest mom in the

world and if she decides to go far away she knows that I'll always be with her even when I'm not but the best part was then we got to talk about her hopes and dreams and I was able to pull the excitement of those future moments into the present now living a life with such an uncertain future ahead is hard for sure just like learning how to surf is hard but I have found that when those waves of fear grief and anxiety come it's best to just ride them out as for surfing I will admit I was having a little bit more trouble riding those

waves my body was sore I was disappointed that I wasn't trying harder and doing better and I really missed home home but then on the last day I got a wakeup call more specifically a wakeup text a friend who shared my diagnosis had passed away and it hit me hard I thought she can't surf anymore but I can and it gave me renewed motivation to get out there one last time and do the hard thing in her honor so that morning I suited up I grabbed my board and marched down to the water I let all of my new friends in on the news so

they knew that I was a woman on a mission and off I went as I paddled out to the spot the sun came out from behind the clouds and I closed my eyes and I just thought about how grateful I was for that moment and for every part of my life really every single part and then I did it I got up on that wave and I finally rode it all the way out and then I was so proud of myself and I felt so free as I got wave after wave after wave so now I'm not like a regular Mom I'm a cool mom

so I've revamped that 5-year plan to be a lot more than just two words because there's so much more to life than just surviving and I'll be riding those waves as they come literally and figuratively because the hard work may be here to stay but my determination to live a glorious life is even stronger thank

foreign last year was the worst year of my life but last year was also the best year of my life it started when I got a phone call from one of my doctors Lindsay unfortunately we found evidence of metastatic cancer on your spine I could hear her sadness in my head began to spin because I knew what this meant stage four breast cancer is incurable now any one of us could get hit by a bus tomorrow that's the saying it helps us remember that no one really knows what tomorrow brings but how many of us are truly living that way when we're walking safe on

the sidewalk you're not really living every day like it could be your last but how would you change your life if you were suddenly pushed onto the road last year I was pushed onto the road and I can see my bus coming and all I can do right now is run for my life now that's pretty bad but it could always be worse now it doesn't exactly help when I get that advice from other people but when I can get there on my own all I have to do is think about everything that makes me really grateful and it gives me the strength to keep

running for example I'm grateful that it's me on the road and that my two children get to be safe on the sidewalk they're seeing me run from this bus and they know that I've outrun a bus before but they haven't exactly noticed that there's technically no room for me on that sidewalk anymore I'm also grateful for my husband because he's always running with me and he'll even pick me up and carry me when I can't run anymore together we focus on the present moment because that's all we have but we have to simultaneously prepare for a future that's largely unknown for a long time I've

been developing this superpower where I will continue to crush life even when my world is coming down around me and that's very important now that I'm living with a diagnosis that has a do not Google prognosis started when I was very young because it's rare to be diagnosed with ulcerative colitis which is an autoimmune disease in your digestive tract at such a young age I have early memories of being angry and upset that everyone around me who could just eat whatever food they wanted and not get sick and I felt it was really unfair that they didn't even know how lucky they were that's when

my mom gently reminded me that this whole eating food thing is a really normal human thing to do and if I was gonna get mad at everyone for just doing what was normal it was just gonna hurt me more in other words I would have to be the one to adapt if I was going to make the most of this life that I have been given I didn't know it at the time but that was the beginning of a special kind of resilience I got really good at accepting and moving forward no matter what health challenges were thrown my way and that includes four years

ago the first time I originally heard those four words I'm sorry it's cancer awareness that our health can change at any moment has something that's given me a completely unique perspective on life I'm really proud of it and I actually consider it a huge advantage in life I'm starting to wonder if anyone here is starting to feel a little jealous because through all the surgeries the chemo the radiation the scans the list is it's too long to list I've managed to accept and move forward and maintain a positive mindset and hold on to hope and although false hope is what everyone has heard of it's

false despair that I struggle with at times for example the first time I met my new palliative care doctor and she handed me false despair in the form of a hospice pamphlet that was a really good day fear anxiety depression grief they're present every single day I am having to evolve my superpower to learn to live with these emotions not exactly in harmony but I'm getting there stories of women who've defied the odds are everything to me because some have been outrunning their bus a lot longer than doctors ever said they could and some buses even just disappear without explanation and although luck plays a

bigger part in this than any of us would like to admit I believe Miracles can happen and I'm hopeful that I'll be one in fact I already am my kids are watching me and my actions will one day become their playbook when something really hard happens to them I want them to remember that this life is really good even when it feels impossibly hard and it's always worth fighting for I want them to be resilient and optimistic and know that it's okay to be vulnerable so I'll show them that I never want them to give up on their goals and dreams so here I am

up on this stage right now not giving up on mine and above all else I just want them to listen to their mother because when they're having the worst year of their life I know they can make it the best year of their life just like me
