On April 25, 2023, Lula Lounge in Toronto was filled with emotion, courage, and the unshakable spirit of human resilience as Speaker Slam® hosted its Against All Odds competition.
Ten speakers took the stage to share their most powerful stories of perseverance and determination. But it was Lindsy Matthews, a local mother battling Stage 4 cancer, whose story captured the hearts of everyone in the room.
Matthews' speech was a masterclass in vulnerability and courage. She shared her journey of facing a devastating diagnosis while continuing to show up for her family, her community, and herself. Her words reminded every person in the audience that true strength isn't the absence of fear; it's the decision to keep going even when the odds feel insurmountable.
The evening's theme, "Against All Odds," could not have been more fitting. Every speaker brought their own extraordinary story of overcoming adversity, but Matthews' raw honesty and emotional depth left an indelible mark on the audience and judges alike.
The Results
Lindsy Matthews was awarded first place, receiving a prize package valued at over $10,000, including a $2,000 cash prize and an invitation to compete at the Grand Slam Finals for the title of Inspirational Speaker of the Year.
The competition was judged by an expert panel including Darius Bashar (Photographer and Creator of ArtistMorning.com), Shannon Loftus (Senior Content Producer, Breakfast Television/CityTV), Priya Sam (Storytelling Expert and Keynote Speaker), and Joze Piranian (5x TEDx Speaker and International Keynote Speaker).
